Turn the TV Off?

Let’s face it. While it sounds good on paper, keeping the TV completely off-limits usually isn’t a realistic option. According to a 2006 study from the Kaiser Family Foundation, parents and caregivers use the TV to manage hectic schedules (we’re guessing that means getting the laundry done), keep the peace, and even give kids a chance to relax. (But if you’re a parent, you already knew that.)

 Tune In To These Facts
  • The problem isn’t the amount of television watched, but the content your kids may be seeing, according to a 2005 study in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology.
  • Two-thirds of children have televisions in their bedrooms, according to Parenting 24/7. And if you’re not in there with them, how do you know not only what they’re watching, but how they’re interpreting it?
